Mixed media collage artwork featuring a blue prickly pear cactus with detailed pad segments and spines, positioned next to geometric shapes including a large green spiral form and angular blue panels. The composition combines natural desert flora with retrofuturist art elements in a vintage inspired aesthetic. Created using traditional collage techniques with layered papers and mixed materials, showing the distinctive textural quality of analog collage work by artist Gwena Dye Pringle.
Mixed media collage artwork featuring a vintage inspired 1950s Ford Fairlane automobile in two-tone mint green and cream white, shown from a rear three-quarter view. The classic car displays period-correct details including round taillights, chrome bumper, and Ontario license plate. This retrofuturist art piece demonstrates a digital element in an otherwise traditional collage piece seamlessly blending contrasting media.
Mixed media collage artwork featuring a single green crescent moon shape hand-cut from textured paper and positioned against a purple background. The curved form displays the characteristic rough edges and layered appearance of traditional collage techniques, with subtle variations in green tones and paper texture visible throughout. This vintage inspired element represents Gwena Dye Pringle's retrofuturist art approach, where individual paper components are carefully cut and pasted to create larger compositional works using analog methods mixed with various experimental techniques.

Retrofuturist Art: Making it My Own

Illustrations

Illustrations are typically known for being visuals intended to explain an idea or highlight a concept. Though much of my art can be loosely categorized as such, I would consider myself more of an experimental, retrofuturist artist than a typical illustrator.

Usually starting with an idea I want to convey, I curate media to help me share my concept effectively. Is the concept best suited by the handmade quality of a linocut block or does it require a looser, more whimsical art style?

Retro mini prints carved out of erasers are good individually, but digitally enhancing a handful of thematically relevant ones creates more meaningful artwork. Some art is beautiful for the sake of beauty, others are more thought-provoking, but either way, experimenting with media can be very valuable.

Digital collage artwork titled 'Power of Creativity II' by Gwena Dye Pringle of Eternal Escapade, featuring a surreal composition of a woman's head and shoulders in black and white with her brain opened to reveal miniature figures, vintage machinery, and industrial elements with orange accent colors. This meaningful artwork by the St Paul artist explores themes of creativity and morality through retro futurist art aesthetics, combining vintage inspired art elements with contemporary digital collage techniques. The piece serves as the feminine counterpart to 'Power of Creativity I,' showcasing Eternal Escapade's experimental art style of blending human anatomy with mechanical and fantastical elements to visualize a meaningful concept.
An orange-colored bandana featuring printmaking at home techniques by Gwena Dye Pringle of Eternal Escapade, made from recycled fabrics with hand-printed geometric patterns created using hand-carved linocut block stamps, displayed alongside a vintage mid-century modern clock with a black face and gold hour markers. This example of handprinted clothes showcases the artist's linocut block printing process, with the bandana's repeating block-print design artfully draped over the rectangular clock, demonstrating Eternal Escapade's approach to sustainable textile art and printmaking at home methods.

Printmaking

In an age of AI art and fast fashion, handcrafted wares are more valuable than ever. Every piece - whether a shirt, tote bag, or bandana - is either selected secondhand or made from recycled fabric.

The lengthy process of stamping each element by hand ensures that no two are exactly alike. The stamping process adds a raw, artistic touch that makes each garment a truly unique expression of art.

All of these artist-designed clothes and wearable pieces are a small part in a greater endeavor to reduce waste and bring awareness to the threat of fast fashion’s impact on the environment.
