About Gwena

I am a Christian artist constantly learning ways to glorify God in a messy world through whimsical art. Over the years, my nerdy and adventure-saturated life bubbled into a love for exploring life’s curiosities through the lens of retrofuturism.

Science fiction has the benefit of coating topics in a way that makes them easier to swallow. Concepts that may be too difficult to consider for more than a moment are now comfortable enough to meditate on. Because of this, I can process life's challenges and present them to my audience as whimsical art in bite-sized pieces.

My goal is to share my excitement for adventure, curiosity for life, and love for God with my audience in a way that glorifies Him and enables them to wrestle with topics through meaningful artwork.

A handmade linocut print featuring a stylized mid-century modern lamp with a bright yellow semicircular shade and teal-green cylindrical base. The retrofuturist art shows a red lightbulb outline within the yellow shade, created through simple printmaking techniques that give the surface a characteristic textured appearance. The linocut block printing method produces organic edges and visible ink grain typical of relief prints. The artwork is printed on white paper with "A/P" (artist's proof), "John 8:12," and an artist signature at the bottom. The geometric design captures the essence of vintage lighting through contemporary printmaking.

Digital collage artwork by Gwena Dye Pringle of Eternal Escapade featuring the artist and her husband wearing eclipse glasses while observing a spectacular celestial scene. The retro futurist art composition combines photography from the April 2024 eclipse with space imagery, showing the couple against a lunar landscape with Saturn's rainbow-colored rings prominently displayed in the sky above them. This surreal piece by Gwena demonstrates Eternal Escapade's signature using astronomical elements to create personal, and meaningful artwork. Here she creates a dreamlike space-age aesthetic that captures both the wonder of the eclipse experience and the vastness of the cosmos.

Beginnings and First Loves

In college we had a studio space we called the Print Hive. It was here, pulling prints off of my reduction linocut block and seeing my hard work magically come together, where I fell in love with printmaking. Under the care of professor Bobby Martin, I learned the treasured traditions of the craft and found my passion in experimenting.

In an illustration class, I was asked to create a series of posters based off a poster of our choice. I chose a vintage sci fi illustration from a mid century pulp magazine. I realized the simple image, two figures in a lab of sorts and wearing scuba-esque TVs on their heads, provided enough creative imagery to fuel me beyond that semester.

I already loved science fiction and the mid century modern art style so you can imagine the excitement I felt discovering the collision of the two in retrofuturist art. As a Christian artist, incorporating those themes and visual elements into my whimsical art was exactly what would launch my creative journey toward a unified artistic direction that continues to fuel my deepest passion.

I value meaningful art, whether that is recycled hand printed clothes or a thought provoking illustration. Over time, I have discovered that my style is a blend of retrofuturist and whimsical art with experimental media. There is so much to discover in life and one medium is not enough to be able to express it all.

Atomic-age art from the late '40s to early '70s tends to focus on adventure and making ourselves better, two things I regard highly. The colors and visual motifs of the mid century modern era are very inspiring to me and influence my artistic decisions. Using retrofuturism as a vehicle for my concepts, I introduce my values to my audience glazed in bright colors and visions of other worlds through whichever media suits each unique idea.

I treasure the hands-on/ human element in my art that makes each piece unique. Even the closest registration (lining up the layers) on a limited edition reduction print will never be as precise as a computer rendering. My physical collages are meticulously cut and pasted and digital collages have freehand elements and traditional components. As a Christian artist, there is a deeper value to closely examining something that was created with careful intention and imperfect hands.

Future Vision

The ultimate dream is to grow my business to a sustainable point where I can be an artist full-time. This summer will be a test run to see if we can make that happen. I am directing all my energy towards this project as I find the balance between what I love to create and what my audience loves to take home.

I just moved to Saint Paul Minnesota where I have a better opportunity to reach an art-loving crowd as well as sell at local markets and festivals. Join the Eternal Escapade to follow my journey to get access to behind-the-scenes content, early spotlights, and exclusive deals.
