Bad Idea (Values)

About the Piece
This retrofuturist traditionally printed illustration depicts a mid century modern style suburban house being recently crushed by an asteroid. I made this during my last semester of college while wrestling with assumed power over my life. I knew that I had no control over what would happen in the future, and yet, with white knuckles I clutched anything that gave me a semblance of power over the unknown. Inevitably, the sky would fall in and I would recognize what a bad idea it had been to try and control what was always out of my reach. Even as I stand staring at the rubble of my "dream house" God was masterfully crafting my future.
Making the piece
"Bad Idea (Values)" was made using a traditional printmaking intaglio aquatint process. Beginning with a blank copper sheet, I etched the linework into the plate until I was satisfied. Then I lightly sprayed the sheet with spray paint that would protect parts of the copper so that the solution I would dip it in would "bite" exposed copper resulting in a grainy texture. I repeated this process four to five times, protecting areas I wanted to be lighter until I was satisfied with the image. Once the plate was complete I inked and pressed it just like any other intaglio process.
Because of the nature of traditional printmaking, only eleven of these limited edition prints for sale were ever made. Add this meaningful artwork to your collection today.
