KYN Live in Concert: The Christian Music We Need Right Now

This past weekend, my husband and I adventured to Chicago to watch our friends Alex and Katya absolutely crush it at the Montrose Saloon. Their punk/alt-rock band KYN delivered a performance Sunday night that left me hopeful about the state of Christian music.

I’ve had more than a hard time trying to find good Christian music that isn’t “worship music.” The kind of stuff that gets me pumped about the art form, while being rooted in something bigger. I’ve had seasons of crisis when I’m not connecting with music made by believers. It’s often watered-down, predictable, and sometimes? Kinda boring. But KYN? They're doing something special with their alt-rock sound, and it's exactly what the Christian music scene, and every music scene, desperately needs.

The energy at Montrose Saloon was electric. Between Katya’s musical soul and Alex’s creative visions, KYN was destined to be spectacular. I’ve been a huge fan of their stuff since the very first single, “10/27,” that came out last year, so seeing them live was such a treat.

The highlight of the night was definitely their debut of "Hey Kid, Hold On," which just dropped on Spotify and other music platforms. The song tackles real, raw human emotions and struggles without the heavy-handedness or sugar-coating that plagues so much Christian music.

What I am most excited and encouraged about is how KYN is living proof that Christian music/ music made by God’s children can be glorifying to Him by being an authentic expression of creative endeavors. They don't shy away from challenging subjects about life, faith, or even critiques of the Church itself. They approach these complex themes with the subtlety of carefully crafted lyrics and incredible musical composition.

This is what I hope more Christian artists should be doing. Being honest, complex, and unafraid to wrestle with the messy parts of life through creative media. Intentional or not, KYN understands that God gave us creativity and passion for a reason, and they're using those gifts for His glory.

Go check out "Hey Kid, Hold On" on Spotify, and keep an eye on KYN! They're just getting started, and if this Chicago music scene show was any indication, they're about to shake things up in the best possible way.
