More About Me: The Little Things

Updated: Aug 19

Bride and groom share a joyful kiss in a garden, with blurred motion capturing their dance. Trees and greenery create a romantic backdrop.
My wedding

Okay, now to the fun stuff.

I'm 24, and married to my best friend. Our favorite hobby is watching a movie and talking about it afterward. If it's a bad movie, you might find us with a whiteboard and markers as we discuss how we would have made it better. I will always be on Letterboxd during the movie to see who's in it, and when it was made. Never in the theater of course, appalling of you to think that of me. If you have Letterboxd, I would love to follow you; it's a lot of fun; you should definitely check it out.

My Passions and Inspirations

I'm obsessed with mid-century modern art. My friends sometimes send me pictures of mid-mod things they find in the wild, and it makes my month. This fascination with the atomic age aesthetic often influences my work, particularly when exploring retrofuturist themes of both optimistic utopianism and cautionary tales of dreadful ends.

So, surprise surprise, I'm a trekie. My mom always loved Star Trek and passed that love down to us. My husband and I have an activity we call "parallel play" (yeah, like the psychology term for toddlers), where we work on individual projects with a show or audiobook on in the background. Last summer, my mom joined us with her croque project, and we watched the original series. My ideal day.

When I reflect on work from these times, I tend to notice glimpses of influence that seep through the screen or speakers.

A handmade linocut print featuring a stylized lamp with geometric shapes. The retrofuturist art shows a green rectangular shade at the top, a bright yellow semicircular element beneath it on a wavy orange base. The linocut block printing technique produces characteristic textured surfaces with visible ink grain and organic edges typical of simple printmaking methods. The artwork is printed on white paper with "A/P" (artist's proof), "John 8:12," and an artist signature at the bottom. Warm, retro feel.

I'm a people person, but our recent move to St Paul has put a slight damper on that. Everyone here is lovely, but there's something about trying to make friends as an adult that I haven't quite figured out. Hm, I wonder if anyone else has noticed this particular challenge of growing up.

It can be difficult to express excitement over something you are fond of with someone who doesn’t share similar excitement. I love old clothes, old cars, old music, old buildings, old people. I especially love the art and music from the '40s to the '80s. One of my dearest friends is an older man I met while I was a barista. He was surprised by how versed I was in older media, particularly film and music, and that's how we hit it off. I hope to make this a space for all to express unbridled enthusiasm for art, media, beauty, and more to an adventure-filled community.

But enough about me. I want to know what hobbies you enjoy. Do you ever see something so beautiful or full of character that all you want to do is live in a reality decorated by the feeling of that object? Okay, maybe I'm getting a little artist-heady, but I want to know, what aesthetic would you live in if it was its own universe?
