Paint & Fellowship

Earlier this year, I was given the opportunity to lead an art event at my church’s “staycation.” For the second year in a row, Capital City Church hosted a weekend-long event where we focused on fellowship with fun activities such as a pancake breakfast and a scavenger hunt. My pastor and I thought it would be super fun to do a “paint & sip” style activity and called it “Paint & Fellowship.” I brought an original piece of art and, step by step, led everyone in making their own.

We wanted to make something very Minnesota and landed on a loon, the beloved state bird.

The process started by hashing out some thumbnails and landing on a color palette.

I needed to keep it simple enough for a group to do in about an hour, so I stuck to flat colors and a slightly more geometric style.

The finished design I brought in as an example

When the time came, I opened by reading A Liturgy for Beginning an Artistic Work to prepare our hearts to worship our Creator in this act of recreation.

Ten paintings of loons on blue canvases with black and white details, displayed on a yellow background. Subtle differences.
Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, and they did such a great job!

I’ve never led something like this, but had such a blast that we’re talking about doing it again sometime!
