Grandma, Mom & Me: Creating Fall Tea Towels for Capital City Fest

You know those moments when you find the perfect piece at a thrift store? That happened to me during my recent road trip from St. Paul to Joplin, and it's led to something pretty exciting for my upcoming markets.
A 9-Hour Journey and a Serendipitous Discovery
Last week, I made the drive down to Joplin to visit my mom and grandma. Not a short trip, but I’ve made it once before and armed myself with snacks, music, and prayer. While I was there, my mom and I started brainstorming what new products I could add to my fall market lineup. We kept coming back to tea towels. There's something so cozy and practical about autumn-themed tea towels, but finding the right fabric seemed like it might be a challenge.
Then, at our second thrift store stop, I spotted it. Tucked between some old sheets and tablecloths was this perfect piece of fabric! Maybe an old blanket or throw? It was even just a little sturdier than usual fabric for tea towels, so almost kitchen-towel heaviness, if that makes much of a difference. Even better, it had a tear in it, so I got it for 50% off.
A Family Affair: Three Generations, One Project

Back at my grandma's house, what started as me trying to catch up on projects turned into a full family production. My mom learned how to do the corners with bulky fabric, my grandma hopped on the sewing machine, and I think my younger brother even popped in to help for a moment.
We worked until dinner time, tearing the fabric into perfect tea towel rectangles, hemming edges, and sewing to ensure each piece would be market-quality. There's something truly special about working on a creative project with my loved ones and sharing my passions with them in a uniquely tangible way.
The Home Stretch: The Artistic Touches

I'm back home in St. Paul now, and I just finished sewing the remaining tea towels we couldn't complete during my visit. My tiny stand-up desk is swapped back and forth from ironing station to sewing station, and honestly, I'm loving every minute of it. (Also, yes, sewing at a stand-up desk has its challenges, haha!)
But here's the part I'm really excited about - the printing phase is about to begin! This is always my favorite part of any project. Taking those blank canvases and transforming them with brand-new fall designs that no one has seen before.
Something Completely New for Capital City Fest
Here's what makes this collection extra special: these fall tea towel designs will be making their very first appearance at Capital City Fest on September 13th. I've been working on some autumn-inspired patterns that I've never shown at any of my previous markets. Think retro-inspired designs, seasonal colors, and cozy vibes that'll make your kitchen feel like the perfect autumn retreat.
These aren't just tea towels - they're conversation pieces, practical art for your home, and the kind of seasonal decor that makes every day feel a little more festive.
